Why is this important?
Infant mortality rate continues to be one of the most widely used indicators of the overall health status of a community. The leading causes of death among infants are birth defects, pre-term delivery, low birth weight, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), and maternal complications during pregnancy. While the rate of infant deaths has fallen overall, there are disparities by race/ethnicity, income and geography. Equitable, high-quality care for moms and babies and community-based interventions can help reduce the rate of infant deaths. This is a Healthy People 2030 Leading Health Indicator.
