What is this Indicator? This indicator shows the hospitalization rate due to physical and sexual assaults per 100,000 people.
Why this is important: Assault is a crime of violence against another person and is often defined to include not only violence, but any physical contact with another person without their consent. Violence in the United States is pervasive and can drastically change quality of life. All individuals, including elderly persons, females, and children, continue to be targets of both physical and sexual assaults, which are frequently perpetrated by individuals they know. Poverty, discrimination, lack of education, and lack of employment opportunities are important risk factors for violence and must be addressed as part of any comprehensive solution to the epidemic of violence. Strategies for reducing violence should begin early in life, before violent beliefs and behavioral patterns can be adopted.
Technical note: The trend is a comparison between the most recent and previous measurement period. Confidence intervals were not taken into account in determining the direction of the trend. |
