Days with Unsatisfactory Air Quality

County: Hawaii
Measurement Period: 2020
This indicator shows the number of days per calendar year in which the Air Quality Index (AQI) value was over 100.

Why is this important?

Air quality has a considerable impact on health, including contributing significantly to the development of respiratory disease. The Air Quality Index (AQI) is based on five air pollutant measures: ground-level ozone, particle pollution, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide. Using a scale from 0 to 500, AQI values of 100 or lower are considered satisfactory. As values increase, the air quality worsens and the level of health concern rises; first for high-risk groups (e.g. asthmatics) and then for the general population. This is a Healthy People 2030 Leading Health Indicator.
