Teens Who Drink Non-Diet Soda or Pop at Least Once Per Day

County: Kauai
Measurement Period: 2021
This indicator shows the percent of public school students in grades 9-12 who drink a can, bottle, or glass of soda or pop at least once per day

Why is this important?

Adolescents (12-19 years old) are the highest consumers of sugar-sweetened beverages, or SSBs. Non-diet sodas or SSBs have a large amount of added sugar, very few nutrients, and comprise a great calorie contributor in teen diets. This indicator is important because SSBs have been associated with obesity. Reduction in SSB consumption can result in a decrease in weight and is an important measure to include in obesity prevention.
