Asthma Death Rate 35-64 Yrs

County: Kauai
Measurement Period: 2003-2012
This indicator shows the death rate due to asthma (ICD-10 codes J45-J46) among persons aged 35 to 64 years.

Why is this important?

Asthma is a disease that causes repeated episodes of wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness, and coughing. There is no cure for asthma, but it can be controlled by taking medicine and avoiding the triggers that can cause an attack.  However, some attacks can be extreme and result in a medical emergency or even death.  In the last two decades, asthma mortality rates have risen, especially among children and young adults under 19 years of age.  Proper management and control of the disease greatly reduces the risk for severe morbidity and mortality.
