Melanoma Cancer Death Rate

County: Honolulu
Measurement Period: 2018-2022
This indicator shows the age-adjusted death rate due to melanoma cancer (ICD-10 code C43).

Why is this important?

Melanoma accounts for about 1% of all skin cancers but it is by far the leading cause of skin cancer deaths because of its tendency to spread to other parts of the body, including vital organs. There were 88,059 new melanoma cases and 8,092 deaths in the US in 2019. While the proportion of people who develop melanoma has more than doubled in the past 30 years, death rates have been declining since 2013. Early detection of melanoma increases the 5-year survival rate.
