What is this Indicator?
This indicator shows today's level of particle pollution, also known as particulate matter.
Please note that the value represents the daily particle pollution as measured by a monitor or combination of monitors near the stated location.
Why this is important:
Particle pollution refers to the amount of particulate matter in the atmosphere. Particle pollution in the air includes a mixture of solid and liquid droplets. Some particles are emitted directly; others are formed in the atmosphere when other pollutants react. Particles come in a wide range of sizes. Particles of concern include both very small, "fine" particles (less than 2.5 micrometers) and somewhat larger "coarse" dust particles (2.5 to 10 micrometers). Those less than 10 micrometers in diameter are so small that they can get into the lungs. Inhaling particulate matter can adversely affect health through illnesses such as asthma or cardiovascular problems. The smaller the particulate matter, the more hazardous it is to health. Fine particles have been more clearly linked to the most serious health problems.
Technical Note:  The distribution is based on data from AIRNow's rating system. Green values (0-50) represent good air quality days. Yellow values (51-100) represent moderate air quality. Red values represent conditions that are unhealthy to sensitive groups (101-150), unhealthy (151-200), very unhealthy (201-300) and hazardous (>300).
