Teens Who Use Tobacco YTS

Measurement Period: 2019
This indicator shows the percent of public school students in grades 9-12 who used a tobacco product on at least one day in the past 30 days. Products included cigarettes, cigars, chewing tobacco, snuff, or dip (2003-2015) and e-cigarettes and hookah were added in 2017-2019.

Why is this important?

Health behavior patterns formed in adolescence play a crucial role in health throughout life. Those who start using tobacco young are more likely to have a long-term addiction to nicotine than people who start later in life, putting them at greater risk for smoking-related illness and death. Tobacco use is responsible for more than 480,000 deaths per year among adults in the United States. If smoking prevalence among adolescents persists, it is estimated that 5 million persons under the age of 18 will die prematurely from smoking-related diseases.
