Teens who Use Smokeless Tobacco

Measurement Period: 2019
This indicator shows the percentage of public school students in grades 9-12 who used a smokeless tobacco product (chewing tobacco, snuff, or dip) on at least one day in the past 30 days.

Why is this important?

Smokeless tobacco users have an increased risk of developing cancer of the oral cavity and esophagus; chewing tobacco and snuff contain at least 28 cancer-causing agents.  Additionally, use of smokeless tobacco has been linked with an increased risk for heart disease, gum disease, and oral lesions.  Contrary to popular misconception, smokeless tobacco products are addictive in the same way as cigarettes.
