Schools on Train Safety Program

A Good Idea

Description

This innovative program, which began in 1998, provides teachers and students with the opportunity to experience train travel via AMTRAK Cascades to educational and fun destinations throughout the school year. These destinations include visits to various museums, an aquarium, and the state capitol. Through a partnership with Operation Lifesaver's Stop, Look and Live, teachers can arrange to have an Operation Lifesaver speaker provide a presentation on train safety at the school prior to the train trip or on-board the train. Any interested school, located in Western Washington state, can take advantage of the Schools on Train Safety Program.

Goal / Mission

The goal of this program is to introduce teachers, students, and chaperones to rail and train safety, the environment, and train travel. This program targets all students from kindergarten through high school.

Results / Accomplishments

Since its inception, the Schools on Train Safety Program has reached more than 5,000 students.
